JAMMU, Oct 30: Police today arrested three persons including an Executive Engineer and a Junior Engineer and was looking for many others in a fake currency racket, which originated from Kupwara district of Kashmir Valley, and recovered Rs 65,000 worth fake currency so far in Jewel Chowk and Roop Nagar areas.
Police said the racket might have been spread to several other parts of the State. The arrested accused were being interrogated to ascertain their links and source of the fake currency.
Three accused, who have been arrested so far in connection with fake currency racket, have been identified as Manu Karwal son of Ragunath Bhat, a resident of Roop Nagar, presently posted as Executive Engineer in Flood Control Department at Kupwara, Sharief-ud-Din son of Ghulam Mohammad Malik R/o Aain, Kupwara, a Junior Engineer in the same Department and a civilian Lal Din son of Nizam Din R/o village Khanabal, Kupwara.
Police said Manu Karwal was arrested from Jewel Chowk after he was found roaming there in his Maruti Zen car under mysterious circumstances. He was reportedly waiting for some persons to hand over the fake currency to them when he was arrested by a Nowabad police station team headed by SHO Jaipal Sharma.
Police recovered Rs 45,000 worth fake currency from the possession of Executive Engineer. He was subjected to questioning during which he disclosed identity of his two associates, who were arrested from Roop Nagar and Kupwara.
A total of Rs 65,000 worth fake currency in the denomination of Rs 1,000 has been recovered so far from the possession of three arrested accused.
A Maruti Zen car in possession of Karwal has also been seized, police said, adding that the accused were being quizzed to ascertain the source of fake currency and the purpose of pumping it in the market.
Police teams have, meanwhile, left for Kupwara for making some more arrests on the basis of disclosures made by the arrested persons, who have been booked under Sections 489-A, 489-B and 489-C of RPC.
Reliable sources revealed that the arrested persons had been taking fake currency from some persons in Kupwara and disposing it of in Jammu. They had been indulging in this practice for the past quite sometime now, they said.
Only few days back, police had arrested three persons in Poonch with Rs 45,000 worth fake currency.
Sources said fake currency was being pumped into the State from various channels, which were being explored by various agencies. “In some cases, it was just meant for minting money while in some other cases, the currency was being used for anti-national motives”, they added.
