JCC reschedules protest programme

SRINAGAR, Oct 29: The Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) of the Government employees has postponed its protest programme by a day following the Jammu bandh call given by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on November 5 on the eve of opening of Durbar Move offices in the winter capital of the State.
According to the fresh schedule, top leaders of JCC would assemble on the Shalimar Road near the Civil Secretariat at Jammu on November 6, second day of Durbar. The JCC leaders would then lead a protest rally consisting of hundreds of Government employees towards the Civil Secretariat in support of their demands.
The protest rally is likely to be attended by employees belonging to various Government Departments coming from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh divisions of the State.
At Srinagar, the second rung leadership of JCC would protest outside the Divisional Commissioner office and raise their demands. They are also expected to hand over a memorandum consisting of their demands to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Samoon.
On November 7, the second day of the protest programme a call for complete pen down strike has been given. The JCC has appealed the Government employees of the three divisions of the State to observe a lock out on this day. The JCC has asked the employees to suspend their work against the alleged Government apathy with respect to their demands.
Talking to Excelsior, senior JCC leader and president of his faction of Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), Mohammad Khursheed Alam said that holding a protest rally on November 5 would not have gone well with the policies, programmes and manifesto of the JCC.
“Since BJP has given a call for Jammu bandh on November 5 we thought it better to put off our protest programme by a day”, he said, adding. JCC programme is purely pro-employee and they don’t want any political colour to be attached to their protest programme. He exuded confidence that the November 6 and 7 protest programme would be successful. He said the information about the revised programme has been passed on to the employees.
Along with Khursheed, the other top JCC leaders who are going to take part in the protest rally upto Civil Secretariat at Jammu include Abdul Qayoom Wani, Mohammad Gafoor Dar, Ganesh Khajuria and Balwant Singh.
Sharing his views with Excelsior, Mohammad Gafoor Dar said that he had already conveyed it to the other JCC leaders that it would not be prudent to give a call for protest rally on November 5. He expressed satisfaction that his concern has been addressed as the protest programme has been rescheduled for November 6 and 7.
The employees’ demands include raising of their retirement age from the existing 58 years to 60 years to bring it at par with that of the Central Government employees. The other demands are regularization of services of daily wage and ad-hoc employees working in various Government Departments, removal of pay anomalies and payment of arrears as per the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.
