NEW DELHI, July 5: Irked by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s unprecedented outbursts against the state Governor KN Tripathi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke to the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and urged her not to deviate from “decorum”.
“Rajnath Singhji spoke to the Chief Minister and urged not to resort to political blame game. The sanctity of the Constitutional position of a Governor ought to be respected,” a source said here.
The development comes after Governor last night lodged a complaint to the Home Minister about Chief Minister’s remarks against him. Ms Banerjee had yesterday alleged the Governor of behaving like a “block president of BJP”.
Last night, the Governor spoke to Mr Rajnath Singh and told him Ms Banerjee’s observations were surprising.
Sources said Mr Tripathi spoke to the Union Home Minister and explained to him that he was surprised at the outburst of the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister’s “attitude and language” was surprising, the Governor has said.
The remarks came after Ms Banerjee told reporters at state secretariat yesterday that the Governor was behaving like a “BJP block president” and even had threatened her.
Union Minister SS Ahluwalia, also the BJP MP from Darjeeling, has said that the Chief Minister should maintain decorum when it comes to matters concerning the State’s Governor.
Another BJP MP from West Bengal and Union Minister Babul Supriyo has said in a tweet that allegation against the Governor was brought only to divert from the situation in violence hit areas.
“The entire Governor ‘thing’ was manufactured to deviate attention from the burning situation in Basirhat. Trinamool Congress thinks that everyone else is a fool,” Mr Supriyo, MP from Asansol, said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, reports from the state said around 400 para-military forces of Border Security Force (BSF) today visited violence-hit Baduria near Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district.
The group clashes and arson erupted over a Facebook posting of a 17-year-old youth. He has been arrested, sources said.
However, there were sporadic violence and some people were forced to desert home for safety.
In past two days, unruly mob set afire several police vehicles and also attacked policemen, including the Superintendent of Police.
“Things are returning to normal and the Centre is keeping an eye on the situation,” the source said. (UNI)
