Award Culture needs to be discouraged

Prof Javed Mughal
The major defect in our system is that we concentrate more on conferring awards for honesty than being serious about giving punishment for dishonesty. Obviously this illogical cult of extending applauds to the honest employees, politicians and several other components of the system have given a defensive valve to those who are responsible for damaging the very infrastructure of the country. Honesty needs not be decorated with additional accolades and awards and appreciations since it is duly paid in the shape of salaries and emoluments and when we undertake an official position, we definitely sign an agreement with the Government to be honest and fair in our dealings and working in exchange for a specific amount of salary. We sign a sale-deed of honesty and hard work. So when we are legally bound to be honest to the lock stock and barrel with no way out of it, I don’t think one needs to be treated as a special servant or contract worker who is doing a favour to the country. It must be compulsory for every citizen to dedicate his life to the cause of nation even without claiming even a bit of return. This country has given us everything-a respectable niche in the society, name and fame, a respectable survival and everything else required for a dignified life, and hence there should be no problem in going ahead doing something tangible for the nation. Yes, if beyond the ken of allotted assignments and duties, someone does something commendable in the interest of the society and humanity which he is otherwise not bound to do, only then one can be considered for any addition award, crown or appreciation. Unfortunately we have now developed an obnoxious habit of pretending to be honest just to grab name and fame which in fact we don’t deserve for.  Hence there is no question of showering acclamations on someone who is fair and square in working or delivering good to the nation because one is bound to be so.
On the contrary, if one is not sincere and honest to one’s duties, one deserves to be stringently punished, fired or even hanged if it is demanded by the circumstances. To me one who is not performing well or upto the mark in his area is the worst anti-national element and must not be tolerated and accommodated at any cost. Anyone who has a rational mind to think can observe the dire consequences of this pernicious award culture on the soil of this country. This is the only tract of land on this globe where most of the aspirants of awards strive to be honoured for honesty through dishonest means. A politician, trying to motivate the innocence of the masses through nefarious designs; a police officer committing the criminal deeds to be a hero in the eyes of the system and be embellished with gallantry award; a teacher manipulating the situation to attain the award of the best teacher so on and so forth. More than 60 percent of corruption can be attributed to the obnoxious cult of Award Ceremonies now in India. The question is if I have lost my life while fighting for the nation on the front, it was my duty which I have been paid for and need of the hour is not to shower all accolades on me but to pounce upon those who did not fight well. Similarly if a professor in the system has brought 90 or 100 percent result in his stream needs not be garlanded and applauded for that because he is heavily paid for the same; rather the need of the hour is to whip and wallop the ones who have fetched very poor results in their streams. After all we are thriving on the Govt. exchequer.  While searching for one honest and dedicated face, we bypass one thousand dishonest, corrupt and blood sucking elements of the society who cause hundred times more damage to the national fabric. Sometimes I get flabbergasted to note that the Awards and Citations stand instituted in the names of those who dedicated every trice of their life for their nation but they were neither honored with the awards nor did they desire to be decorated with the garlands. Gandhi sacrificed his whole life for this country, did he receive any award?  Was Shah Abdul Azizi Dehlvi who issued first fatwa to stand and fight against British Imperialism blessed with any Gold Medal or Brass Buckle? Who conferred awards on Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Raj Guru, Chander Shekkher Azad, Maulana Azad, Patel, Dadabhai Naroji, S.C Bose, Jatin Das, and more than 126000 Indians who lost their lives during freedom struggle? The matter is be contemplated in depth and details very seriously. In fact we receive double remuneration for one service to our motherland who has given us everything. This is highly disgusting. It is quite unfortunate that we don’t possess the capacity to learn from our ancestors. Our country has the credit to have the largest number of traitors and anti-nationals for the simple reason that they have been brought up in a system that believes in doing nothing but claiming everything. We can go to any extent to win recognition despite the fact that we don’t deserve it in many ways. The irony of circumstances is that in majority cases the awards are conferred on those who are nothing but the scum of society contributing nothing to the system. Those who deserve to be hanged publicly are awarded clandestinely and they manage it through back door influences. Shakespeare says in one of his tragedies Othello, “It is the curse of service where the up-gradation goes by the letters of recommendation.”
The worst enemies of this country are those who stand endowed with the responsibility of taking care of the country but they utterly fail. They are responsible for sowing, generating and spreading the seeds of corruption in the society. They have almost converted this country into a black-market where awards and medals are sold and purchased publicly. Most of the power-lords in the political mechanism are no more than the traffickers of Vanity Fair. Hence award culture needs to be banned and replaced with the Stringent Punishment Culture. Performance-based survival should be allowed in the country. The Policy of ‘Do good and Find Good’ or ‘No work no pay’ must be implemented in letter and spirit. Only then the things will turn the corner. What a joke! The best doctor is the one who does not attend on the patients as per his professional ethics and is seen at his private clinic during duty hours, a good professor is one who does neither know anything about the subject of his bread and butter nor does he teach the students at all; simply goes to the College, marks his arrival in the morning and comes back in the evening to mark his departure after doing his personal work; a good police officer is one who earns a lot of money and cash on the blood of the innocents and a good Minister is one who befools the masses and play with the sentiments of his people with a smiling face and inhuman heart. And these are the people who rule the roost and are awarded. Unless this system having a crippling effect on the health of this nation comes to an end, the country will not come back on the track.
