Bye-Bye 2016

Prof. A.N.Sadhu
Time is silent and swift escaper. In the continuity of time line, year after year passes into history leaving behind the recollections, sweet and sour, seeking to sensitise the human being towards understanding the importance of time and its optimal use. Time path is unending and the humanity will keep on trecking on this path till eternity. The march along the time path is a long journey for every human being to be traversed to reach the routine goal points. In exceptional cases, people set before them some additional goals which they would wish to achieve for the welfare and the emancipation of the mankind. History takes note of everything and the time passes on.
2016 will also pass into history very soon. It has been one of the most turbulent years in the recent past, across the globe. It has been equally disturbing in our state. The merchants of death and devastation have had a field day and the people have gone through an agonizing period, mentally and physically both.
For the first time, a four month shut down was witnessed in Kashmir. Stone pelting became a routine phenomena and the death and destruction occupied the headlines of the daily News Papers. Educational institutions, not only remained closed but were also subjected to arson on a large scale. Efforts were made to spread dark clouds on the very future of a vast population of students attending educational institutions to shape their future. Offices could not work and as a result, all developmental projects received a severe blow. Ceasefire violations became the order of the day. Cross border firing caused death and destruction on a large scale. Many a young soldier lost their lives in terror attacks and several innocent lives were lost.
The land of peaceful and harmonious living should witness violence and dance of death and destruction, is very unfortunate and painful. India is a country of freedom in real sense allowing its citizens the liberty to preach and practice any faith without fear or prejudice but preaching and practicing violence and terror are alien to our culture. The enemies of humanity have thrown all the norms to the winds and nurtured the forces of terror all through the year.. Among many explanations of widespread violence, the violence in Kashmir is taken as an extension of global terror based on fundamentalism and religious extremism, abetted and materially supported by our enemies. Kashmir has been in turbulence since 1947 or may be since 1931 itself. Tribal raids supported by regular army, 1965 conflict, 1971 war and 1999 Kargil have been the unsuccessful attempts to snatch Kashmir by force and the proxy war since long has kept Kashmir on a boiling pot. The disadvantage to the people of the state.
There have been several peace missions launched by the government and some by individuals and groups as well. Without going into any details and logistics of these peace missions, it is firmly believed that any successful peace mission has to emerge from within. The people who engineer the trouble in the valley either of their own or on behalf of the enemies of the country have to understand its futility and the people who have been the silent sufferers of these troubles have to raise their voice against these engineered mischief’s that bring the disruption of life on regular basis. Some peace missions have been sold as civil society initiatives which have not received either the acceptance or the credibility by the people. Some NGO’s supported by foreign funding have also been venturing into mission Kashmir but without any success. Unless, therefore, the civil society initiative emerges from within the state, such a mission from outside the state will not succeed.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir is a state of composite culture regionally, lingually and religiously. There are several stake holders and each one of them is as important as the rest. Unless all the stake holders are taken on board, nothing will move forward much less the efforts of peace and harmony. Shree Vajpayees formulation of ” Jammuriat, Insaniyat and Kashmiriat needs to be explored and operationalised if it ensures lasting peace and stability. An entire community of Kashmiri Pandits, the ab-origins of the valley, who are languishing for the last 26 years, should fit in this formulation to start with. They need to be addressed through this formulation to respect Jamuriat, insaniyat and Kashmiriat. The three regions of the state have to be treated on equitable basis for their development. The cobwebs need to be removed and doctored interpretations to be done away with, and a resolution to the contentious issues sought within this formulation of course, the basic premise of the formulation shall have to be the constitution of the country and undisputed instrument of accession.
As we bid farewell to 2016, we should prey that all we witnessed during the year does not recur. The world is moving fast, we have to keep pace with it so that we don’t relapse into depravation of the benefits of fast changing technology and scientific knowledge. Regional problems can’t be viewed in local perspective alone. These have to be examined in relation to global perspectives as well. While as we open gates to knowledge, scientific advances and technological developments, we need to insulate against evil designs and nefarious activities of our enemies as also the enemies of the humanity. Time does not wait, it maintains its pace and continuity. We cannot live in history, we only learn from it and move forward.
Let the year 2017 dawn with hope and optimism. Hope for sustenance and optimism for enlightened period ahead.
