Srinagar, Nov 20: The flight operations at Srinagar Airport were hit by poor visibility for fourth consecutive day today, forcing the Airport Authority of India to cancel all the flights to and from Srinagar.
A senior official told Excelsior that due to poor visibility, no flight landed or took off from Srinagar Airport today. He said that all 17 flights at Srinagar airport were cancelled today due to poor visibility.
This is for the fourth consecutive day that the air traffic was disrupted at Srinagar airport. On Thursday around a dozen afternoon flights were cancelled due to poor visibility, on Friday no flight landed at Srinagar airport while yesterday only two flights managed to operate.
In the meantime, after prolonged dry spell in Kashmir, the Meteorological Department today forecast rain and snow in higher reaches during the next 48 hours. “After a long dry spell of nearly three months, we are expecting rain and snow in the higher reaches of the State during the next 48 hours,” the official said.
And today both day and night temperatures across Kashmir were recorded below normal with chilly winds billowing across the Valley. This forced people to remain indoors.
The night temperatures improved throughout the Valley due to cloud cover but stayed below normal. “Due to the night-long cloud cover, there has been overall improvement in the minimum temperatures through Valley but day temperatures dipped”, said the official.
The official said the lowest night temperature in Srinagar city was minus 0.9 degree Celsius while it was minus 3.5 degree Celsius in Pahalgam and 1.5 degree Celsius in Gulmarg.
Kargil town in Ladakh region recorded minus 5.2 which is the lowest recorded night temperature in the region. Leh town recorded minus 3.8 as the minimum temperature.
The day temperatures across Kashmir were reported below normal. Srinagar recorded 12 degree Celsius while normal day temperature for this time off the year is 15 degree Celsius, Qazigund recorded 13.5 degree Celsius, Pahalgam 12.8 degree Celsius, Kupwara 11 degree Celsius, Kokernag 13.2 degree Celsius, Gulmarg 11.4 degree Celsius, Leh 12. 6 degree Celsius and Kargil 12.5 degree Celsius.
The lowest night temperature was 11.9 degrees Celsius in Jammu city while it was 12.0 degree Celsius in Katra town, 9.8 degree Celsius in Batote, 3.5 degree Celsius in Banihal and 4.6 degree Celsius in Bhaderwah town.
The day temperatures in Jammu city was recorded at 25.2 degrees Celsius, while it was 22. 7 degree Celsius in Katra town, 18.7 degree Celsius in Batote, 21.8 degree Celsius in Banihal and 19.8 degree Celsius in Bhaderwah town.
