Srinagar, Nov 1: Amid rising tensions along borders, the cross-LoC trade between India and Pakistan was today suspended for one week with officials on this side citing festivals as the reason for the suspension.
Custodian of the Trade Facilitation Centre (TFC) Salamabad in north Kashmir’s Uri area of Baramulla district, Farooq Ahmad Shah confirmed to Excelsior that the trade has been suspended for a week’s time but he said this was done due to Diwali and other festivals by people involved in the business after mutual agreement with their counterparts across the Line of Control (LoC).
“Basically, there were festivals like Diwali and Bhai Dhoj and the people in Custom Department and others involved in this trade are Hindus. So they, after consulting their counterparts on the other side, decided to suspend the trade for week’s time in order to celebrate these festivals with their children back home,” he said.
The TFC Custodian said that there is an understanding between both sides. “In times of festivals or other occasions, they mutually agree with each other and thus suspend the trade,” he said and rejected the reports that it has anything to do with the ongoing military confrontation along borders between the armies of India and Pakistan. He said the trade would resume on Tuesday next week.
