Tributes paid to Gandhi, Shastri on their birth anniversary

JAMMU, Oct 3: Various political organizations, Government departments and educational institutions today celebrated the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri besides 1st anniversary of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
BJP Mahila Morcha (BJPMM), Jammu district team under the leadership of its president Rekha Mahajan organized a cleanliness drive in Trikuta Nagar in connection with birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. On the occasion, Rekha Mahajan, said that as Mahatma Gandhi secured freedom for Mother India and it is our duty to ensure that our country also get freedom from dirt, pollution and unhygienic environment.
To pay tributes to Gandhi Ji on his birth anniversary, a special cleanliness drive under ongoing Swachhta Pakhwada was launched at Administrative Complex, Samba district by District Development Commissioner, Sheetal Nanda. All the district officers along with their subordinate employees actively participated in cleaning up the complex area. ADC, Pawan Sharma, ACD, Tilak Raj, PO IWMP, Pardeep Manhas and DPO, Aijaj Qaiser participated in the drive.
On the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, Department of Architecture and Landscape Design (DoALD), SMDVU organized Swachh Bharat Diwas by collaborating with the Block Development Authority (Panthal) and the Gram Panchayat (Sirah Kotla). They took up the market area and carried out a vigorous cleaning drive throughout the day. A small street play was organized by the students late in the evening to spread awareness among the villagers.
A function to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti was held today at Government Degree College, Paloura, Principal and staff members of the college paid floral tributes to the father of nation. Some students threw light on the life and teaching of the Mahatma Gandhi and a symposium was also organized by the NSS volunteers of the college.
NSS Units of GGM Science College organized a seminar and slogan making competition on the theme “Gandhian Philosophy” to pay tributes to Gandhiji. Dr Ajeet Angral, Nodal Principal, Jammu Division Colleges, was the chief guest. Dr Rajinder Singh, NSS Programme Officer, threw light on the life of Mahatama Gandhi. Dr Angral in his address, gave a detailed overview of Gandhi Ji’s life and his philosophy of truth and non-violence.
Gandhi Jayanti was also celebrated in Government College for Women, Udhampur. Principal, Prof KS Koushal, along with senior staff members paid floral tributes to Mahatama Gandhi. The students presented patriotic group songs and melodious bhajans. Some students also spoke on the life and teachings of Mahatama Gandhi.
To commemorate Gandhiji on his birth anniversary, a special assembly was conducted by Model Academy during which students recited bhajans and presented speeches. An Inter House Symposium on the topic ‘Non-violence as a strategy for social change’ was also organized for students of Senior Secondary Wing. Karuna Bajaj, noted social activist and president, Gandhi Samarak Nidhi, was the chief guest.
NSS Unit of Government Higher Secondary School, Budhi celebrated birth anniversary of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi with great fervour and enthusiasm. Principal, Naresh Sharma and other staff members paid floral tributes on the portrait of Gandhiji. Later on the students and staff members collectively carried out the cleanliness drive inside and outside the school premises under Swachh Bharat Mission.
Gandhiji was also remembered on his Jayanti by students and staff of Government Girls Model higher secondary School, Samba. Students threw light on the life and teachings of Gandhiji through their speeches. Principal, JK Raina, in his address, advised the students to follow the path shown by Gandhiji.
In connection with Gandhi Jayanti and 1st anniversary of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Army Public School, Dhar Road conducted an Inter School Drawing Competition spreading across the strong vibrations for “Go Green Go Clean”. The theme for the competition for classes V-VII was “Clean Environment and Welfare of Farm Animal” and for classes VIII-X was “Young Brigade of Swach Bharat”.
On the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, an awareness rally on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was taken out by the students and staff of All India Institute of Local Self-Government, Jammu, through the main bazaars of Jammu city. Later, a cultural programme was organized in the premises of institution. In the end, the students and staff members took pledge to keep their institution, home and surroundings clean.
The birth anniversary of Gandhiji and Lal Bahadur Shastriji was celebrated in KNIT Green Model Academy, Sangrampur Jammu. Prof JL Kotwal was the chief guest and Bimla Baloria was the guest of honour. Both the guests paid floral tributes to two great leaders. In his address, Prof Kotwal spoke at length about the relevance of Gandhian philosophy in the modern times.
Gandhi Jayanti was also celebrated at MC Khalsa high School, Chand Nagar, Jammu. Principal, Dalbir Singh, along with staff members paid tributes to Gandhiji. A cleanliness drive was also organized on the occasion in school premises.

Special Anti Crime Team and Welfare (SACT&W) Society celebrated birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Sidco Chowk, Bari Brahmana. On the occasion candles were lit and flowers offered on the photo of Mahatma Gandhi. Those present on the occasion were Sanjeev Adgotra, chairman SACT&W, Madan Lal Dubgotra, vice chairman Naveen Pal and others.
A colourful programme was organized in the premises of Government Girls Middle School, Jindral, on the eve of birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The programme began with paying floral tributes to portrait of Gandhiji followed by debates, speeches and skits on Gandhiji. Later, a rally to aware people about need of cleanliness, was organized.
