JAMMU, Oct 3: The casual labourers of various departments of the State Government today conducted a mega protest rally to press the Government to fulfill their burning demands including regularization of their services.
Thousands of casual labourers, CP workers, daily wagers, need based workers as well as ITI trained workers of various State Government Departments including Agriculture Department, Jammu Municipal Corporation, PHE Department and Forest Department assembled this morning at Green Belt Park, Gandhi Nagar, under the aegis of All Departments Casual/Need Based Workers/CP Workers Union and then in the form of a rally moved towards Divisional Commissioner’s Office at Panama Chowk, Jammu.
Carrying banners and placards in their hands, the protesting workers were raising slogans against the Government and in support of their demands, which include release of monthly wages from the Wages Head, framing regularization policy for the workers, compensation to handicapped workers or kin of the deceased workers and insurance policy for workers.
However, when the rally reached Divisional Commissioner’s office, the officer was not present, which irritated the workers and then they staged protest at Tawi bridge and disrupted vehicular traffic for about half an hour.
While addressing the protesting workers, Tanveer Hussain, president, Casual Labourers Union, PHE Department, said that workers are facing many problems due to non-release of their pending wages by their respective departments. “Our family members are on the verge of starvation while future of our wards are in dark, as due to non-payment of wages they are even finding them unable to fulfill their day-to-day needs”, he added.
The speakers said that the Government has money to increase the salaries and perks of Ministers, MLAs and MLCs and to spend lakhs on the luxuries of anti-nationalist people in Kashmir, who are responsible for creating disturbance in the Valley but no amount to pay monthly wages to daily wage workers, who are actually running all the State Government departments.
Later, the protesting workers submitted their memorandum of demands to Additional Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, who reached the spot and assured the workers that their genuine demands will be addressed soon, as the same are under consideration of the higher authorities in the Government.
