Srinagar, Sept 27: The shutdown in Kashmir and curfew like restrictions in parts of Srinagar disrupted normal life for 81st day today while a stone pelting incident in the outskirts of Srinagar led to road mishap in which a girl was killed and her sister badly injured. And police arrested 51 people across Kashmir on charges of creating trouble in Valley.
A police spokesman said that stone pelting led to death of a girl this morning when she along with her sister was hit by a vehicle near Parimpora, Srinagar. The vehicle was reversing and hit the girls as it came under stone pelting.
“The girls were identified as Fozia and Nadia daughters of Mohammad Sidiq Lone resident of Gulbagh. They were hit by a cream colour Scorpio near Rogan Gali Parimpora. The driver while reversing his vehicle hit the girls as his vehicle was stoned by the miscreants early morning”, said the police spokesman.
“The girls were critically injured in the incident. Both the injured were shifted to hospital where elder sister Fozia succumbed to her injuries. A case FIR number 222/16 has been registered and investigation taken up”, police said.
Police said one person Furqan Hamid Son of Abdul Hamid resident of Zoonimar was injured when miscreants pelted stones on him while he was riding a scooty near Allie Masjid Eidgah, Safa Kadal. “He received injury in his head. The injured person has been shifted to SKIMS Soura for treatment, where his condition is stable”, the spokesman said.
In Srinagar, three Police Station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta and Khanyar -were placed under restrictions with hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel deployed on streets since morning. However, in other areas of Srinagar security forces were deployed in sensitive areas but there was civilian movement without any disruption in these areas.
In the evening, stone-throwing clashes erupted at many Old City localities including Nowhatta and Noorbagh during which security forces fired teargas and pepper gas at the protesters. In Civil Lines and uptown areas of the Srinagar, movement of private transport and pedestrians was seen since early morning but shops, commercial establishments, educational institutes and most of the banks were closed. The security forces were deployed at sensitive areas in strength.
Clashes and protests erupted at Samboora area of Pulwama district in which three people sustained injuries and also at Bijbehara in Anantnag district and Drugmulla in Kupwara district of Central Kashmir.
The Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir statement said that the situation remained by and large normal and peaceful today although a couple of stray stone pelting incidents were reported.
The statement, an incident of arson was reported from Kulgam this afternoon. “Miscreants in their attempt to disturb the situation set on fire a Panchayat Ghar at village Kujar in district Kulgam,” it said.
The statement said that in its continuous efforts to curb the activities of trouble mongers police arrested 51 ‘miscreants’ during past 24 hours who were involved in different offences of causing disturbance in the situation in the Valley.
The statement said that during the day good movement of traffic was observed in the Valley including the city Srinagar. “A large number of street vendors selling different articles of daily use were on the streets of Srinagar city,” it said.
