SRINAGAR, Sept 7: Militants tonight tried to storm Police Station Pulwama but police foiled their attack while three soldiers were injured when militants attacked an army convoy in Handwara area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district this morning.

Militants tried to storm Police Station Pulwama tonight but the security guards foiled the attack. Reports said that four heavily armed militants tried to force their way into Police Station to carry out Fidayeen attack at around 12. 05 a.m. but security guards fired back. The firing continued for 15 minutes  and militants fled under the cover of darkness after failing to enter the Police Station. Massive searches have been launched by police, army and CR thPF against the militant group.

Militants tonight attacked the residents of a National Conference leader, Abdul Rashid Khaday at Begam Pora Damhal Hanjipora in Kulgam district and snatched four rifles from the security guards. Reports said that militants overpowered the security guards and took away the rifles. They include two AK rifles, 2 Insas rifles, one SLR and one .303.

The army convoy was attacked by militants at Kralgund along Kupwara-Baramulla highway in Handwara area this morning when it was on its way to Srinagar.

Three soldiers, two identified as Havaldar Jagtap Singh and Sepoy Shafiq Malik, have injured. All the three injured army men were air-lifted to Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar for treatment. The condition of one of the three soldiers is stated to be critical.

Militant outfit Hizb-ul-Mujahideen meanwhile claimed responsibility for the attack. However, sources said that it is a group army had already inputs that a group of 5 militants present in the area were planning attack on convoy in the area. They said that these militants are believed to be belonging to unknown Afghan brigade that is linked to Jaish-e-Mohammad and is headed by Abdullah Salfi.

They said that the militants targeted an army bus in the convoy by firing at it but the driver didn’t stop and drove out of the firing range and the vehicle that was behind the bus stopped at a distance away from militant firing range thus avoiding casualties.

Army later conducted search operation in the area but militants had fled. However, sources said the searches against the group will continue tomorrow.

Meanwhile army’s 46 RR and SOG Baramulla today conducted searches in Hyder Mohalla Khawaja Bagh area of Baramulla after they received inputs about presence of militants in the area.

Army’s 52 RR and SOG Baramulla in the meantime today continued its operations against a group of 5 LeT militants in Sultanpora Kandi area of Baramulla district. The group had slipped out of security cordon last week.
