Workshop on ‘Production of quality Basmati rice’ organized

KATHUA, Aug 30: One day workshop on “Quality Improv-ement in Production of Basmati rice for export” was organized today by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kathua in collaboration with Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF), Meerut (UP).
The workshop was organized under the overall guidance of Dr R K Arora, Associate Director Extension & Incharge KVKs. As a part of the initiatives to improve the quality of Basmati rice in Jammu, the workshop was organized for farmers and field functionaries of Kathua district.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr P K Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu.  He stressed upon the need to make agriculture more profitable by considering it as an industry. He emphasized upon the judicious use of pesticides in Basmati and adoption of sustainable technologies for increasing production with the use of less amount of water.
Dr J P Sharma, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu, informed the farmers about the on-going research on Basmati and assured the participants about publication of organic Package of Practices for Basmati by the University.
Dr R K Arora, Associate Director Extension & Incharge, KVKs, expressed his willingness to organize such workshops in other districts.
Dr Ritesh Sharma, Senior Scientist, Basmati Export Deve-lopment Foundation (BEDF) disclosed about the importance of basmati in India and Pakistan
Vipin Sambyal, Chief Agriculture Officer, Kathua, briefed about the steps being taken by the department for promotion of Jammu Basmati.  Ranjan Sundaresan, Executive Director, All India Rice Exporters Association impressed upon the basmati growers to avoid the indiscriminate use of pesticides.
Dr A K Razdan, Professor & Head, Division of Plant Breeding & Genetics, elaborated about the improved practices of Basmati cultivation and emphasised upon the need of adoption of quality practices in its production. Dr R S Bandral, Sr Scientist, Division of Entom-ology delivered a lecture on “Integrated Pest Management in basmati rice”.
Dr. Amrish Vaid, Sr Scientist & Head, KVK Kathua delivered a lecture on “Disease Management in Basmati rice” and a lecture on “Marketing strategies for basmati rice” was delivered by Dr Pawan Sharma, SMS (Agricultural Economics). Dr Berjesh Ajrawat, SMS (Agricultural Extension Education) discussed about the extension strategies for profitable basmati production.
