This has a reference to DE news item regarding sanction of Seed Certification Unit for J&K State on the initiative taken by Dr Jitendra Singh MoS in PMO, (D.O.NER) Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, Space and Youth Services & Sports (Independent charge). It is indeed a welcome step for the farmers of J&K State. At present the Certified Seeds were available from outside and the Agriculture Department and farmers had to face lot of problems for making timely availability of quality seeds. The Seed Certification units should be established at such places which have the matching land and climatic conditions to suit entire J&K State. One such area which is centrally located and easily approachable having matching land and climatic conditions with entire hilly area of J&K State is the Land of Chenani Tehsil in Udhampur district. It is pertinent to mention that Chenani has developed its name and fame as vegetable hub in Jammu province. Almost all crops of summer and winter are grown in this area. One special thing to mention is that the process of potato seed production and storage has already gained momentum in this area and there is no match to this land elsewhere. The faculty of SKUAST -Jammu is in know of the positive points of the land and favourable climatic conditions of fertile lands of Chenani and there has been constant demand to open (KVK) Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Chenani for the last many years.
It is therefore requested to all concerned that keeping in view all the positive parameters of Chenani area, the fit case may kindly be submitted to Government of India through Dr Jitendra Singh who always takes keen interest for the overall development of J&K State. In addition, the SKUAST-Jammu should open Research Centre at Chenani to save the extinction of old varieties of desi-potato and desi rice of this area besides the original tomato variety of Chenani known as Chakki-Tamatar be saved from further extinction.
