As soon as the House proceedings started, the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress legislators from Jammu took to their feet and strongly raised the issue of temple desecrations at Roop Nagar and Nanak Nagar.
BJP’s Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Vibodh Gupta said the desecration of another temple in Jammu yesterday, saying it had hurt the religious sentiments of the people there. “This matter is not just political but our sentiments are involved as well. Our sentiments have been hurt. It seems there is a conspiracy. We will not tolerate it,” Gupta said in highly charged tone.
Gupta’s party colleague, Ramesh Arora said “it seems some agency or politician is behind the incidents” and demanded the Government should probe the incidents. The BJP legislators amid uproar demanded shifting of police officers of Janipur area. Arora also demanded that the Government should also make changes at Administrative level.
Congress MLC, Naresh Gupta, said the issue is sensitive and demanded that the Government should make clear who the elements are behind these sacrilegious acts. The PDP legislator, Surinder Chowdhary, said the desecrations are an attempt to de-stabilize the Government. “It’s a conspiracy… PSA (Public Safety Act cannot solve this issue,” he said.
After the uproar, Minister for Law, Abdul Haq Khan said the investigation into the twin incidents of desecration of temples in Jammu was on to ascertain whether there was any conspiracy behind them to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in the State.
“Investigations are on in both the incidents. Action has been taken in the yesterday’s incident and the Government is serious. The concern which the members have expressed to ascertain what is at the back of these incidents,” said Khan.
“Absolutely, the Government is looking into the incidents and will go to the roots to see whether any conspiracy is there to disturb the conducive atmosphere in which this Government is working,” Minister said in response to legislators’ assertion of conspiracy with regard to vitiating the atmosphere. Khan said Government’s intention is clear and it would not let off anyone.
“I want to assure the members and this House that as soon as we come to know about the roots, we will not let off anyone. It is our concern that we will not let anyone to vitiate the conducive atmosphere, wherein the tourism has flourished this year, be it in Jammu, Ladakh or Kashmir,” Khan said. However, he said it does not feel good to shift the officers immediately after an incident.
“If we find any officer involved in this at any level, we will not spare him. But it does not feel good to act against anyone as soon as an incident takes place,” the Law Minister added.
