Crushing a seven year old girl to death by a speeding matador in Nagri Parole area of Kathua is akin to wanton murder for which not only the driver of the matador but also the local traffic police have to be held responsible. Road accidents are becoming very frequent in our State especially on Highway and other link roads mostly for reason of traffic police becoming highly negligent of their duty.
It is but natural that the people of the locality get enraged and react angrily so as to put the matador on flames. They have the reason and when the authorities fail to perform their duty, people find a chance of expressing their anger and anguish through violent means. We have repeatedly said that the first and foremost issue is that of issuing fake driving licenses. We learn that there is a big racket of issuing fake licenses. The traffic police have not devised foolproof method of curbing the nuisance of fake licenses. They can do but they have not had the will to do. Secondly, in many cases of accidents it was found that the mini buses or matadors did not have official permission to ply on certain routes for the reason of mechanical snag in the bus. Some mini buses ply even after the expiry of permit date and thus lives of commuters is endangered.
As per reports, the driver of the matador which crushed the seven year old child under its wheels is absconding. The police should find him out, set up full-fledged inquiry into the case and punish the culprits. But at the same time the traffic police personnel on duty in the area should also be called to book and if it is found that dereliction of duty has led to the tragic accident, action should be taken against him. This is not the first road accident within the city or town limits. The traffic department should not take things lying low. Public resentment can take ugly turn and thus a situation can arise. It is time that the Government moves swiftly to stem the tide.
