Chairman condemns Kud incident

SRINAGAR, June 14:  Legislative Council Chairman Haji Anayat Ali today condemned Monday’s incident at Kud along Srinagar-Jammu National Highway which left a woman dead and three others injured in the exchange of fire between a militant and security forces.
As soon as the House met this morning, the House Chairman said he condemns the killing of the woman – Mamata Devi (45) in the firing by a militant in Kud. The Chairman directed the Government to provide specialized treatment to the injured and also inform the House of the status of their treatment.
Later, Ali informed the House that an injured woman had undergone an operation, while another surgery would be performed on her soon. He also said the Government has assured of providing the best treatment to the injured.
Meanwhile, Leader of the House and Education Minister Naeem Akhtar read out a statement on the incident in the House after opposition National Conference (NC) legislator Sajjad Kichloo said “there was confusion about it”.
Akhtar said police station Kud had received “information of movement of suspects” on Monday evening. “A joint team of CRPF and police started searching vehicles at Karnal Nallah in Kud and an SRTC bus bearing registration number JK02Y 0444 travelling from Srinagar to Jammu was stopped for checking,” he said. The Minister said when passengers were asked to get down from bus for checking, a person started firing on the security forces personnel.
“It resulted in bullet injuries to three persons,” the Minister said. He identified the injured as Mamata Devi (45), Ruby (32) – both from Jammu and Balbir Singh (50) from Punjab.
Akhtar said Devi succumbed to her injuries on the way to a hospital, while Ruby has been shifted to Military Hospital Udhampur and Singh is admitted in Udhampur hospital for treatment. “The security forces retaliated which resulted in the death of the militant,” he said, adding that the slain militant has been identified as Tanveer Sultan, a resident of Ibrahim Colony in Bemina here.
An AK 47 rifle, a pistol and other ammunition was recovered from the slain militant, Akhtar said. He said a case has been stand registered in police station Kud and investigations have been taken up.
In the Legislative Council, MLA Batmaloo Noor Mohammad Sheikh and Ravinder Raina wanted Government statement on the Kud incident. Raina condemned the attack and said that the militancy incidents in the State have increased recently.
Minister Ghulam Nabi Hanjoora later made statement in the House about incident.
