Protecting forests

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘PM ‘s pitch for saving ‘every drop of water during monsoon’ DE May 23.
As people remain quite apathetic towards the depeting forest cover in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted this attitude through his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’. He said “Depletion of forests has been going on, trees continue to be cut. In a way, the humankind itself destroyed the environment and put itself on the path of destruction’. One of the reasons of depeting forest cover is rapid urbanisation.
Like other parts of the country, our State is also witnessing urbanisation. New roads are made through forests, and the older ones are widenened to accommodate huge number of vehicles. This whole exercise is done at the cost of forests. Though every Government stresses that plants be planted and environment protected, but nothing tangible is done in reality. The forest fires are now a common recurrence. We do not have sufficient means to deal with the issue.
Unless Government agencies work together in tandem, we have to face water shortage and heat waves in the future also.
Yours etc….
