Srinagar, Apr 14: Army today pressed Navy Marine Divers into service to recover body of a young girl who had jumped into Jhelum River at Baramulla in north Kashmir.
An army official said that the girl had gone missing since April 10 and it is presumed that she had jumped into Jhelum. “Based on request of the local populace, including the parents of the girl, and the District Administration, the Dagger Division at Baramulla employed the Naval Marine Commandos along with 46 Rashtriya Rifles in early hours today morning to locate and extricate the body of the deceased girl,” he said.
“This mission was undertaken primarily on humanitarian grounds to give solace to the aggrieved family who felt helpless in retrieving the body. Despite the high water levels and fast current in river Jhelum the Army jawans, without caring for personal safety, dived deep into the river bed, to accomplish the mission,” said the official.
He said one kilometer stretch of the river bed from Cement Bridge to Khanpura shrine is being searched to locate the body of the girl. “Led by an officer the Marine Commandos team assisted by 46 RR went ahead with the mission with full support from the local youth,” he said. The search for the body is still on, he added.
