Srinagar, Apr 11: Police today foiled Lal Chowk sit-in protest by separatist Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) against attacks on Kashmiri students in country’s institutes and detained its leaders and activists.
Dozens of JKLF supporters led by Vice-chairman Bashir Ahmad Bhat assembled at Maisuma neighbourhood here and started sloganeering against the attacks on Kashmiri students and also against the detentions of youths.
The protesters were holding banners and placards and amid sloganeering started to march towards Lal Chowk where they were scheduled to hold a sit-in. However, a heavy posse of police personnel was deployed additionally on the entry point of Maisuma by authorities.
As the JKLF protesters attempted to move towards the Lal Chowk, the police personnel stopped them and bundled them into police vehicles after brief scuffle. The protesters who also included senior JKLF leaders were then detained at a nearby police station.
Earlier, the police detained JKLF chairman Yasin Malik from his house to prevent him from leading the protest march. Pertinently, the JKLF called for a shutdown last week against attacks on Kashmiri students in parts of country on April 12.
