In a high-powered meeting chaired by the Governor at Raj Bhawan and attended by the GOC-in-C Northern Command besides the top brass of civil and military administration, security scenario in the state was brought under thorough discussion. Regular security reviews are part of the overall security scenario in the State. Apart from that some important decisions were taken regarding handing over to the civilian authorities three sites in the State where major chunks of land would be vacated by the Army. The civilian Government had been asking the army for quite some time to vacate the sites and move to alternate places. The three sites under discussion are 16.30 acres of State land held by army adjoining the Campus of Jammu University; 212 acres of land held by army at Tatoo Ground, Srinagar; 456.60 kanals of land at High Grounds, Anantnag, and land held at lower Khurba Thang in Kargil. Army authorities have agreed to vacate these sites and hand over the land to the civilian authorities. The Governor has fixed time frame for handing over the sites. It appears that by 31st March most of the sites will have changed hands. As regards the Tattoo Ground land in Srinagar, the Governor will visit the site along with the army commander and take some decision on spot. There is a proposal of converting the Tattoo Ground into parks and play grounds.
We hail this decision taken jointly by the civilian and military authorities in the meeting. Transfer of land, which is close to the main cities of Jammu and Srinagar to the civilian authorities had become necessary in view of capital cities expanding on all sides and scarcity of land within municipal limits. We welcome the decision and hope that the land now to be vacated will be put to productive use.
