Weatherman predicts snow, rainfall in Valley

SRINAGAR, Feb 10: Weatherman today predicted snow and rainfall in Kashmir Valley even as the minimum temperature rose above the freezing point at most places in Kashmir after light snowfall in hills and drizzle in plains.
A Meteorological Department official said that the snow and widespread rainfall is expected in the Valley tomorrow. The sky here remained covered with dark clouds throughout the day, resulting in decrease in the maximum temperature. The day temperature was recorded 12.3 degree Celsius in Srinagar and the minimum temperature raised over three notches from the previous night’s low of minus 0.8 degree Celsius to settle at 2.5 degree Celsius.
The MeT Department said Pahalgam and Gulmarg were the only places in the Valley where the night temperature stayed below the freezing point.  Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra during summer, recorded a low of minus 0.3 degree Celsius, an increase of nearly three notches from the previous night’s 3 degree Celsius and the day temperature was 12.2 degree Celsius.
The mercury in the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at minus 2 degree Celsius against the previous night’s minus 2.2 degree Celsius and the day temperature was 6.0 degree Celsius.  The maximum temperature in Kupwara was 14.2 degree Celsius and the night temperature settled at 0.4 degree Celsius.
In Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir Valley, the day temperature was recorded 15.4 and the night temperature settled at a low of 0.2 degree Celsius as compared to the previous night’s zero degree Celsius.
The weatherman has predicted the wet spell in Valley till February 13 while he has also predicted light snow in Leh, the cold desert, in Ladakh Division of the State.
