Srinagar, Feb 2: A shutdown was observed in parts of Srinagar including commercial hub Lal Chowk and in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district over the non-rehabilitation of September 2014 flood-affected traders.
The shutdown was called by a faction of Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers’ Federation (KTMF) against the Government’s reported proposal of abandoning financial assistance to the deluge-hit traders. Even as most of the trade bodies including rival KTMF faction headed by Muhammad Yasin Khan had opposed the call but there was a significant impact of shutdown in Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas.
All the shops, commercial establishments, hotels and other private offices were closed across Lal Chowk markets including Residency Road, Regal Chowk, Koker Bazar, Court Road, Budshah Chowk, Poloview, Maisuma and Hari Singh High Street. Due to shutdown, there was less movement of people compared to other days in the otherwise busy Lal Chowk.
Besides Lal Chowk, the shutdown was also observed in Karan Nagar, Qamarwari, Batamaloo and in some markets of Old City here. Except Anantnag Town in South Kashmir, no other district observed the strike on the call of the KTMF faction.
Meanwhile, KTMF faction president Bashir Ahmad Rather has thanked trade community for observing the shutdown on his call and termed it an “eye opener” for the rivals who he alleged are carrying forward the agenda of State.
