SRINAGAR : A massive operation by security forces continued in the woods in the north Kashmir district of Bandipora, where a group of militants are hiding, official source said here today.
However, no contact was established so far with the hiding militants, they said. Hundreds of security forces have joined the operation from different directions to foil any militant attempt to escape from the cordoned off forest area, sources added.
A joint operation was launched by Rashitriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police in the woods at Bhutoo in Bandipora on October 27 evening. However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area in the dense forest, militants hiding there fired at them with automatic weapons. The security forces retaliated, ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding in the initial gunfight one Army jawan, identified as Rifleman Suboth, was injured. The injured was immediately taken to a hospital where he succumbed. There could be more than six militants still hiding in the woods, they said, adding that operation was going on against them. (UNI)
