Srinagar, Oct 10: Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, today hailed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for sending out a message of peace and communal harmony to entire country through a unanimous resolution passed by the House yesterday.
“I want to congratulate the Members of this House for sending a message yesterday to not only the country but to the world that we have ended the atmosphere of hatred,” Mufi said while speaking during the Motion of thanks just before the House was adjourned sine die by the Speaker of the Assembly, Kavinder Gupta.
The Chief Minister said that the resolution passed unanimously by the State Legislature yesterday will help restore confidence of the people in the secular fabric of the country.
Mufti said India is proud of its diversity and no one will be allowed to repeat 1947 when the country witnessed bloodshed and partition in the name of religion. “A loud and clear message of pluralism and tolerance has been conveyed from this august House to the country yesterday. I am sure it will bear positive results and blow away the clouds of uncertainty,” he said.
The Chief Minister asked the people to protect the country’s multicultural ethos and inclusiveness. He said Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, won overwhelming mandate of the people for taking country forward on the path of development. “United we stand, divided we fall. ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikaas’ is not a mere slogan a clear message that hatred will lead us nowhere,” he said.
On the Autumn Session of the Assembly, Mufti said the opposition’s role is to keep the Government on its toes and hold it accountable, so that shortcomings in good governance are identified and removed. He said he made it a point to come to the House everyday to witness the proceedings.
“I was waiting for the opposition to make Government responsible and highlight the issues where we have lacked in governance. But some unfortunate incidents did take place during the Session, which could have been avoided,” he said, while referring to the disruptions of the House proceedings during the first few days of the Session and beating of Independent MLA Abdul Rashid Sheikh by some BJP MLAs hurting their sentiments by hosting a beef party in MLAs hostel.
Mufti Sayeed called upon the Opposition and Treasury benches to draw the line and maintain dignity of the House. “I am thankful to the opposition for playing a constructive role during the brief session of the Assembly,” he added.
The Chief Minister said he was first elected to the Assembly in 1962 when Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was the Prime Minister of the State. He said over the years he is impressed by the improvement in the quality of debate. “Some of the members in the House are really good and with their articulation, they have been able to highlight certain important issues of their constituencies. They are raising relevant points without delivering a long lecture,” he added.
Mufti hailed former Chief Minister and Opposition leader, Omar Abdullah, for moving a resolution on peace and harmony yesterday in the House.
Earlier, speaking at the Motion of thanks, CPI (M) MLA, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, said that diversity of the Jammu and Kashmir is a gift and an asset and the House needs to protect it.
The legislator said that the House has a common minimum programme of good governance and the legislators should work for giving relief to the people.
Speaking on the occasion MLA Bashir Ahmad Dar said that the House should be used for conflict resolution. He said that the MLAs couldn’t raise their issues properly due to paucity of time.
Opposition leader and NC MLA Mubarak Gul said that lot of time of the House was wasted and MLAs failed to raise their issues which are connected with the people. He said that they wanted to take beef ban, Article 35A and innocent killings issue but the Speaker didn’t allow it. He said that India belong to Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and people should respect the sentiments of other religions and communities.
The Congress MLA, Aijaz Ahmad Khan, said that they couldn’t do justice with the people of the State as their issues were not raised in the House.
Speaker Kavinder Gupta later thanked the legislators, Assembly staff, officers, press and security for successful proceedings.
