SRINAGAR, Oct 3: Panic gripped Srinagar after thunderstorm and lightning damaged electronic and telecommunication equipment in Police Control Room (PCR) Srinagar.
The lightning and thunders stuck the city at around 7:23 PM triggering panic and fear among the residents. The lightning followed by deafening explosions led to panic with people trying to take cover for safety.
Due to thunders, the electricity in Lal Chowk and Batamaloo and several areas of city centre was snapped.
The Director of Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus told Excelsior that the thunderstorm was “usual” and urged people not to panic. “It was not a cloudburst but a thunderstorm which stuck in the middle of City and that is why people felt its intensity more. There was no damage and people need not to panic. We were not predicting this thunderstorm in the day. But then couple of hours before the thunderstorm, there was its prediction,” he said.
Following the thunderstorm, light rain lashed parts of city and continued for nearly an hour.
Reports said that the computers and other electronic equipments at Police Control Room (PCR) Srinagar were damaged due to lightning. They said the hotline and other wireless communication system were also affected as the antennas attracted the lightning.
