Shutdown against Pandit townships

SRINAGAR, Apr 11: Kashmir valley observed shutdown today against the Government’s proposed townships for the Kashmiri Pandits in Valley.
The business establishments, schools and colleges mostly remained closed in response to shutdown called by the chairmen of Hurriyat Conference (G), Hurriyat Conference (M) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) against the establishment of Composite Townships for the Kashmiri Pandits in Valley.
Police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were heavily deployed in sensitive areas of the city including Mahraj Gunj, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainawari, Safakadal and Maisuma.
In the afternoon, youth pelted stones at Police in Saraf Kadal area of Old City. Police fired teargas shells to disperse them.
Reports from other parts of Kashmir said that shutdown was observed in north Kashmir’s Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Kulgam, Anantnag, Pulwama and Shopian districts. In Sopore and Palhalan youth pelted stones at police that led to clashes.
