Highway still through for one-way despite fresh landslides, rain

SRINAGAR : Despite fresh landslides and rain yesterday, the National Highway connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was through for one-way traffic and vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu today. Official sources said that several thousand vehicles, including empty trucks and oil tankers, which were stranded at different places on the side of the Jawahar tunnel, including Qazigund and Anantnag for about one week, were allowed to move towards Jammu this morning The sources said there was a landslide in Ramsu and Ramsu area on the highway last evening when large number of vehicles, which had left Jammu in the morning, were on the way to Kashmir.//B //B However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintainance of the highway immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the landslides. Later all stranded vehicles, including those carrying essentials, were allowed to move towards Kashmir, the sources added. Since vehicular traffic from Jammu was allowed on April 6 and 7 to allow transport of essentials to Kashmir valley, it was decided to allow traffic from Srinagar to Jammu today. But, the sources said,only one-way traffic will be allowed till further orders though BRO was working to clear all hurdles and make it to two-way traffic soon. The vehicular traffic on the highway this year had affected badly for a majority period due to landslides and shooting stones, resulting in shortage of essentials in the valley which is totally depend upon imports form different parts of the country.
