JAMMU, Apr 7: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and Relief and Rehabilitation, Syed Basharat Bukhari said that due to heavy rains and consequent landslides and erosion during the months of February and March, 17 precious lives have been lost, besides damaging 3689 houses. He said standing crops in irrigated and un-irrigated areas in Jammu Division have also suffered damage.
The Minister while replying to a calling attention notice by Rajiv Jasrotia in Legislative Assembly today said that damages to public infrastructure and crops are being assessed. He said temporary restoration work is in progress and said that an amount of Rs. 10 crore stands released to the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu for carrying out rescue, relief and temporary restoration measures within Jammu Division as per the SDRF norms and guidelines.
The Minister said that in respect of damages to crops, Rabi Girdawari in plains has been already started and in hilly areas it will commence from April 15. He said the detailed field visits will be carried out and after the assessment is completed the relief will be disbursed among affected families as per SDRF norms.
Jasrotia while turning the attention of Government towards the losses suffered by the people in Jammu due to incessant rains, and floods said the damages have been caused to the crops, agricultural fields, houses, public infrastructure etc in Jammu region and lack of Government response has resulted in large scale resentment and unrest among the common masses of the State.
The MLA who was not satisfied with the Minister’s reply later said that his concern is that the amount earmarked for Jammu region was insufficient as the damage is more. He demanded people be given immediate relief and supplied free of cost ration for three months at least.
