Srinagar, Aug 4: Former Union Law Minister and noted lawyer and BJP MP Ram Jethmalani is challenging the continued house arrest of separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, in the Supreme Court.
Jethmalani called on Geelani at his Hyderpora residence here today and offered to challenge his house arrest in the Supreme Court. Ram Jethmalani is defending one of the senior leaders of Hurriyat Conference (G), Ghulam Muhammad Bhat, who is being tried in a special court in Delhi and is lodged in Tihar Jail. In this connection, Jethmalani visited the spot where from Bhat was arrested in January 2011 so as to prepare his defence.
On his arrival, Jethmalani straightway drove to Geelani’s residence where the two leaders discussed in detail the plight of Kashmiri prisoners and the status of their cases, said a statement of Hurriyat Conference (G).
Geelani thanked Jethmalani for showing interest in the cases of Kashmiri prisoners and providing legal assistance to them, said the statement.
Geelani highlighted various issues, including his house arrest during the meeting with Jethmalani who assured him that he would challenge the restrictions on his movement in the Supreme Court. “Jethmalani expressed surprise over the continuous house arrest of Geelani without any written order and said he will challenge this in the Supreme Court,” said the statement.
Geelani told Jethmalani that since April this year he was not allowed to offer Friday prayers and he was not even allowed to attend marriages of his close relatives.
Geelani told Jethmalani that despite challenging his continued arrest in the High Court Government is not allowing his movement.
Geelani discussed the present political and human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir with Jethmalani.
