Clashes at Nowhatta, 2 injured

SRINAGAR, Aug 3: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) fired in air to disperse the stone pelting protesters who attacked their vehicle and set ablaze the bedding they were carrying.
Clashes broke out soon after Friday prayers between protesters, agitating against recent arrests of youths allegedly involved in recent stone-pelting incidents, and security personnel in Nowhatta area outside Jamia Masjid.
A group of youths emerged from Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta and started pelting stones on police and paramilitary personnel deployed there.
Few CRPF vehicles that were passing by at the time out the incident were the main target of the protesters. The protesters pelted stones on these vehicles and the bedding inside the vehicles was thrown out on the road and set afire. The CRPF men fired several shots in air to disperse the protesters.
Police initially used batons to chase the protesters away, but had to fire tear gas shells to restore order in the area. Two youth were injured in the clashes. However, police said no one was injured.
The youths were protesting against the arrest of youth by police since last Friday following violent protests in Nowhatta, Gojwara and adjoining areas.
This is for second consecutive Friday today that stone-pelting incidents have been witnessed in Nowhatta area of the city after remaining peaceful since October last year.
