Strike paralyses life in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 28: Normal life in Kashmir valley was paralysed today due to a strike called by hardline Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani to protest the killing of a youth in Army firing on Tuesday. However, Bandipora area that witnessed violent clashes during past 3 days remained relatively calm.
The strike was also supported by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association. All the colleges, shops and business establishments remained closed in most parts of Kashmir. Transport on the roads was skeletal with mostly private cars plying on the roads.
Shops in Lal Chowk and adjoining areas remained closed. However, many shops in the outskirts of Srinagar were open.
There was no untoward incident reported from any part of Kashmir during the strike. However, police was deployed in strength at sensitive places to avoid any protests and clashes.
Bandipora area where Army killed one Hilal Ahmad Dar on Tuesday was relatively calm today with minor clashes reported from Bandipora town in which there were no reports of any injury. The town and adjoining areas observed complete shut down with shops and business establishment closed and traffic was off the roads.
The area witnessed violent clashes since the killing of Dar in which around 80 people including police men were injured.
Geelani had called for a strike to protest the killing of Hilal Ahmad Dar in Army firing at Ashtengoo Naar in Bandipora district on Tuesday night.
