Srinagar, Dec 12: A day after a 21-year-old Law student was attacked with acid near her college in Downtown, anger gripped the Valley with students and lawyers taking to streets today demanding immediate arrest of the absconding attacker.
An unidentified car-borne youth had thrown acid at a law student, inflicting serious burn injuries on her face and damaging her right eye, at Nowshera near Kashmir Law College, where the victim is studying law.
The incident led to massive protests that rocked Srinagar and Kashmir University today with students carrying banners demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and justice to the girl.
“This is an unfortunate incident happened with our sister.Tomorrow we could face the similar fate,” said Urooj, a student of Kashmir Law College.
She said they feel insecure and their parents remain worried when they move out of their homes. “Government has completely failed us in ensuring proper security to the girls,” she said.
The students were joined by the civil society members, NGOs and some separatist leaders seeking justice for the law student.
“Today’s incident was the result of Government’s indifference towards the issue,” the protestors accused.
They were carrying placards that read, “Stop open sale of acid, Govt must ensure our life with dignity, Our concern safety and security of our daughters, We want justice, Dignified equality with women.”
Another female student said they were feeling insecure in the State due to repeated incidents of rapes and acid attacks. “We feel insecure to come out of our homes for the studies,” said Fareena.
The protestors were demanding job to the acid victim and her proper rehabilitation and treatment.
The law students of Kashmir University also condemned the brutal act on the girl.
They said such outrageous acts should be dealt with iron hand and that the punishments should be severe.
President Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Dr Nisar ul Hassan has demanded exemplary punishment to the assailants and strict regulation to control acid sale and access.
He said DAK will provide all sorts of medical, social and psychological assistance to the victim.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to twitter condemning the attack.
Meanwhile, police has questioned all the acid sellers in the city to get details of the people who have bought acid from them.
Last year a private school teacher became the victim of the similar acid attack at Baghat-Barzulla in Srinagar outskirts. Police later arrested the culprit and the court fast tracked the matter and awarded him 10 years of imprisonment.
