Massive sanitary plan

Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (clean India programme) had been floated by the Centre some years ago and under this campaign toilets were to be built to put an end to open air toileting in villages. However most of these toilet units have become dysfunctional for technical and other reasons. The Government has spent 3 billion US dollars on providing toilets to the rural population of India but even then not more than 40.60 per cent of rural population has been covered. This means that a massive plan has to be formulated to make India really Swachh Bharat. According to available estimates, the requirement for construction of toilets, Solid Liquid Waste Management projects and associated activities is estimated to be Rs 1,34,386 crore, out of which central share is Rs 1,00,447 crore. Obviously this is a long term plan and will be completed by parts. Actually the country should have taken up rural toileting long back and by now we should have hundred per cent coverage. Nevertheless since the Government has diverted its attention to an urgent requirement of the country, we are hopeful that the programme will be carried forward with serious sense of responsibility.
