SRINAGAR, June 5: Expressing serious concern over the extensive damage caused by the hailstorm in Upper Rajwar and adjoining areas of Handwara, Member of Parliament Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan today urged the Government and district administration to immediately assess the losses and provide relief to affected farmers whose crops and orchards have suffered severe damage.
In a statement issued here, Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan said that the sudden hailstorm, which struck the area this morning, caused widespread destruction to standing crops, fruit orchards and other agricultural produce. He said the calamity has dealt a major blow to the farming community, particularly those families whose livelihoods depend entirely on agriculture and horticulture activities.
The MP called upon the district administration to immediately deploy teams from the Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry Departments for a comprehensive on-ground assessment of the damage. He stressed that the survey should be completed without delay so that affected farmers can be provided timely assistance and compensation.
Ramzan said that many growers and farmers have suffered substantial losses and require urgent support from the Government to recover from the setback. He added that prompt intervention would help mitigate the hardships being faced by the affected families.
He also appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to personally intervene in the matter and ensure that adequate compensation and all possible assistance are extended to the affected farmers at the earliest.
Emphasizing the need for swift action, Ramzan said that delayed relief measures could further aggravate the economic difficulties of the farming community. He urged the administration and the Agriculture Department to work in close coordination and ensure that every affected family receives immediate relief and necessary support to overcome the losses caused by the hailstorm.
