NEW DELHI, June 3: In a remarkable tribute to the legendary Santoor maestro Pandit Bhajan Sopori, musicians from across the country gathered in the national capital to commemorate Pandit Bhajan Sopori Day – A Day of Musicians, observed annually on his Nirvana Divas.
The day-long musical homage was held at Jhankar Hall, Kamani Auditorium, where artists from diverse musical traditions came together in a rare and spiritually enriching confluence of India’s rich cultural heritage.
Revered as the “Saint of Santoor” and the “King of Strings,” Pandit Bhajan Sopori’s legacy was celebrated through soulful performances and heartfelt tribute.
The event witnessed participation from eminent and emerging artists alike, who presented Hazri performances as a mark of respect. Notable performers included Ashique Kumar (Vocal), Ishaan Sharma (Tabla Solo), Ujjwal Udayakumar (Harmonium Solo), Anjanaye Joshi (Flute), Adhiraj Chaudhuri (Sitar), Pritam Ghoshal (Sarod), Samyak Parashari (Flute), Niloy Ehsan (Dhrupad), Vivek Prajapati (Vocal), Harman Rajwal (Vocal), Soumendra Goswami (Sitar) and many others.
Distinguished guests included Ashok Rajput, Ranjana Narayan, Pt. Ravindra Misra, Charanjit Seth, Sadhna Shrivastav, Pandit Vijay Shankar Mishra, Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, Pandit Chetan Joshi, Pt. Rajkumar Majumdar, Virendra Mishra, Ghulam Hasan, Shivani Singh, Lalit Sisodia, Balram Sisodia, Pradip Sarkar, Sushma Dutta Kalla, Usha Kher, Anoushka Majumdar, Poushali Dutta, Dheeraj Vaishnav, Pandit Ajay P. Jha, Ustad Asghar Hussain, Pt. Ravi Shankar Upadhyay, Rishi Shankar Upadhyay, Ustad Saeed Khan, Ustad Rafiuddin Sabri, Swati Tiwari, Saif Naim Ali and many other respected members of the artistic community.
Members of the Sopori family, including Dr Aparna Sopori, Pandit Abhay Rustum Sopori, Ragini Rainu, Sohrab Sopori, Soumil Sopori and Soham Sopori, were also present.
Throughout the programme, artists paid floral tribute and shared personal memories, recalling Pandit Bhajan Sopori’s immense contribution to elevating the Santoor on the global stage and nurturing generations of musicians across genres.
Speaking on the occasion, Pandit Abhay Sopori expressed heartfelt gratitude to all artists and attendees for their overwhelming participation, stating that their collective offering had transformed the day into a deeply moving and memorable tribute to his father’s vision and legacy.
