Centre Relaxes Deputation Rules For IGP Kashmir V.K. Birdi, Clears Way For Fresh Central Assignment

Srinagar, May 31: In a major administrative development, the Central Government has relaxed the mandatory cooling-off period for Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, V.K. Birdi, paving the way for his fresh deputation to a Central Government assignment ahead of schedule.
According to an official order approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), the proposal submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking exemption from the cooling-off requirement for the 2003-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer has been accepted.
The decision enables Birdi to become eligible for a new central posting without completing the remainder of the prescribed cooling-off period in his parent cadre. Under existing deputation norms, officers returning from central assignments are generally required to serve a three-year tenure in their parent cadre before being considered for another deputation to the Government of India.
Birdi had returned to Jammu and Kashmir in September 2023 after serving with the Central Reserve Police Force and formally rejoined the AGMUT cadre in October 2023. He subsequently took charge as IGP Kashmir, where he has been overseeing policing and security operations across the Valley.
As per the prevailing rules, Birdi’s cooling-off period was scheduled to conclude in October 2026. However, the Centre’s latest decision has waived the requirement, allowing him to be considered immediately for a fresh assignment at the national level.
While no official announcement regarding his next posting has been made, administrative circles view the move as a strong indication of Birdi’s likely induction into an important position under the Central Government.
A seasoned police officer with extensive experience in security and law enforcement, Birdi has held several key assignments during his career and is regarded as one of the senior-most IPS officers currently serving in Jammu and Kashmir.
