Missing 328 ‘saroops’ case: Copies of documents provided to SIT, says SGPC

AMRITSAR, May 28: The SGPC on Thursday said it has handed over the copies of the documents sought from time to time by the Punjab Police’s Special Investigation Team, which is probing the case of missing 328 ‘saroops’ (sacred copies) of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

The SIT visited Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s sub-office in Chandigarh on Thursday in connection with the ongoing probe.

The Punjab Police has alleged that SGPC had failed to extend effective cooperation to the investigating agency.

On Thursday, the SGPC said they are fully cooperating with the SIT in the matter.

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami said they have provided copies of the requested documents to the SIT at the committee’s Chandigarh sub-office.

He said that after the FIR in the case of the 328 sacred ‘saroops’ was registered on December 7, 2025, the SGPC first received a letter from the investigation team on January 13, 2026.

The SGPC handed over the requested records to the investigation team at its Chandigarh sub-office on January 29, he said.

Thereafter, another letter was received on February 17, seeking information on eight points, which was provided to the investigation team on March 11. Similarly, on April 3, the investigation team sent a third letter seeking records related to 18 points, which were handed over on April 27.

Proper acknowledgements were also obtained for all these records, the head of the apex religious body of the Sikhs said.

He further stated that today as well, copies of records related to bill books and ledgers sought by the investigation team were handed over to them.

The SGPC president said that it is absolutely false for the investigation team to submit an affidavit in Punjab and Haryana High Court claiming that the apex Gurdwara body is not cooperating.

He added that video records regarding the handing over of the documents are also available with them.

“If the investigation team continues to make false statements in court, these videos and records will be made public,” he said.

He also said that the SGPC has provided certified copies of the records to the investigation team, and if ordered by the court, the original records will also be presented in court.

Dhami stated that the SGPC is fully cooperating in the matter related to the 328 sacred ‘saroops’, but it will not cooperate regarding information being sought by the investigation team that is unrelated to this case.

He said that with regards to the “unrelated information being sought by the SIT”, a letter has been written to the Jathedar of Akal Takht, and whatever directions are issued by him will be discussed in a meeting of the executive committee before deciding the future course of action.

He added that despite the SGPC’s full cooperation, if the investigation team continues to seek “irrelevant information unrelated to the case and keeps making false statements in court alleging non-cooperation by the SGPC, they may be compelled to stop cooperating”.

The Amritsar police had registered a case in December, 2025 in connection with the disappearance of 328 ‘saroops’ of Guru Granth Sahib. (PTI)
