Police busts inter-district tower battery theft racket, several arrested

RAMBAN, May 17: Ramban Police today solved a major theft case involving the stealing of tower batteries from a telecom site in Batote, arresting multiple accused allegedly linked to an organised inter-district racket.
The case was registered at Police Station Batote under FIR No. 26/2026 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), following a complaint by Vivek Raina, Cluster Head of Indus Towers Limited.
The complaint reported the theft of 48 tower batteries, valued at approximately Rs 2.58 lakh, from the Kothari Tower Site in Batote during the intervening night of May 10-11, 2026.
Acting swiftly, Batote Police formed special investigation teams to trace the culprits. During the probe, an auto-rickshaw bearing registration number JK19-1084, allegedly used in the crime, was identified, leading to a major breakthrough.
The driver of the vehicle, Sameer Ahmed of Thore Batote, was apprehended and, during questioning, revealed the involvement of other accused, Gyan Chand alias Gilu, Sanjeet Kumar alias Tilu and Rakesh Kumar alias Chotu, all residents of the same area.
Subsequently, Rakesh Kumar alias Chotu was arrested, and based on his disclosure, police recovered all 48 stolen batteries from the shop of a scrap dealer, Meet Singh, in Thore Batote.
An additional 24 tower batteries were also seized from the premises.
Police investigation further revealed that the scrap dealer had allegedly purchased the stolen property knowingly for monetary gain, leading to his arrest as well.
The probe uncovered that the accused were involved in multiple thefts across Assar, Baggar and Patnitop areas, pointing to a well-organised inter-district network.
Additional arrests were made, including Sameer Ahmed and Gyan Chand alias Gilu.
Meanwhile, the main accused Sanjeet Kumar alias Tilu surrendered before the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC), Batote.
During interrogation, he reportedly confessed that he had sold the stolen batteries to the scrap dealer at Baghu Nallah near a Gurudwara.
Further investigation into the case is underway to identify more links and recover additional stolen property.
