Srinagar, May 11: Residents of Baba Mohalla in Safapora area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district have been facing an acute drinking water crisis for the past several days after damage to water pipelines led to the disruption of supply, locals said today.
According to residents, around 120 households with nearly 265 water connections have been affected due to the bursting of water tap lines, resulting in overflowing sewage and stagnant water inundating residential areas, shops, and the local market road.
Locals said the damaged drainage system has further worsened the situation, preventing repair work from being completed and causing irrigation water mixed with dirt and waste to accumulate in the locality.
“We have been suffering for the last several days. The irrigation water coming from Dursuma Manigam carries dirt which gets dumped here in Safapora. In the past few days, the water has also seeped into shops,” said local resident and shopkeeper Shafat Ahmad.
He alleged that repeated representations to officials have yielded no response.
“We approached the BDO office and the R&B divisions in Safapora and Sumbal, but authorities are passing the buck. One says it falls under Ganderbal while another says it is a Bandipora issue. Nobody is coming here,” he said.
Residents said the damaged pipes have disrupted drinking water supply in parts of Safapora, forcing authorities to provide water through tankers, which they termed insufficient to meet daily requirements.
The residents appealed to the Chief Minister and the district administration to intervene immediately and ensure restoration of safe drinking water supply in the area.
