Police intensify anti-drug drive across Kashmir

SRINAGAR, May 10: The police intensified its anti-drug operations across Kashmir today carrying out raids, searches, arrests, destruction of illegal poppy cultivation, and demolition of properties linked to drug peddlers under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan,
A police spokesperson said that in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police recovered around 5.8 kilograms of illicit poppy crop from an orchard at Nowpora Jagir during investigation of a case registered at Police Station Kreeri.
“The contraband was seized in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and Agriculture Department officials,” he said.
In Sopore, a joint team of police, Excise, Agriculture, and Revenue departments destroyed illegally cultivated opium poppy crop in village Reban after registering a case under relevant sections of law, the spokesperson said.
He further said that police in Anantnag conducted simultaneous Narco Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) at 20 locations across the district targeting alleged drug peddlers and their associates. K9 squads were also used during the operations.
In another action in Baramulla, police demolished a shop and attached structures belonging to alleged NDPS accused Riyaz Ahmad Khan of Janbazpora, the spokesperson said, adding that the property was linked to narcotics-related activities and the action was taken after completion of legal formalities.
In Pulwama, police arrested an alleged drug peddler during naka checking at Frasipora Link Road and recovered nearly 5.9 kilograms of poppy straw from his possession, the spokesperson said. The accused was identified as Mukhtar Ahmad Rather of Frasipora and a case has been registered in the matter.
The spokesperson said Police also carried out searches at houses of suspected drug peddlers in Rajpora area to dismantle local narcotics networks and maintain strict surveillance over those involved in drug trafficking.
Apart from enforcement measures, police in Awantipora organised a drug awareness programme at Ladhoo Market where locals, shopkeepers, and youth were informed about the harmful effects of drug abuse and urged to help in building a drug-free society, the spokesperson said.
