JAMMU, May 8: Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu & Kashmir, today celebrated World Red Cross Day with great zeal, enthusiasm and humanitarian spirit at multiple venues across the Union territory, organizing a series of programmes under the theme “Unity in Humanity.”
The celebrations were held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Jean Henry Dunant, whose ideals of compassion, humanity and voluntary service continue to inspire millions across the world.
At Red Cross Bhawan, Kachi Chawni, Jammu, and Red Cross Building, Exchange Road, Srinagar, the day was marked by enthusiastic participation from dignitaries, institutional members, life members, volunteers, students, teachers and prominent citizens.
In Jammu, a large number of students from various Government and private educational institutions participated in the celebrations and delivered speeches on the theme “Unity in Humanity.” Certificates were distributed among institutional and life members in recognition of their valuable contribution and continued support towards humanitarian and welfare activities undertaken by the Red Cross Society.
Cash prizes and appreciation certificates were also awarded to students who excelled in different competitions and awareness programmes organised during the celebrations.
As part of the week-long observance, the Red Cross Society organized several humanitarian and awareness activities across Jammu, including a painting competition on the theme “Unity in Humanity,” free medical check-up camps and personal hygiene awareness programmes.
Speaking on the occasion, Rohit Khajuria said World Red Cross Day is not merely a celebration but a reminder of the collective responsibility to help the needy, stand with the vulnerable and promote compassion in society.
In Srinagar, G A Qureshi hoisted the Red Cross flag and said the theme “Unity in Humanity” reflects the core values of the Red Cross Movement, including neutrality, compassion and unwavering support for people in need. He called upon people to renew their commitment towards alleviating human suffering and upholding the fundamental principles of the movement during times of distress and emergencies.
Among those who spoke on the occasion were Prof Tariq Rajah, Syed Shabir and Dr Saleem Yousuf, who delivered a lecture on the harmful effects of drug addiction. Certificates of participation were also distributed among students and Red Cross volunteers.
Meanwhile, Government Degree College Katra also celebrated the day under the supervision of Dr Rajini Bhagat. The programme began with a pledge ceremony in which students and staff vowed to uphold the values of humanity, compassion and selfless service.
An awareness lecture was also delivered highlighting the importance of the Red Cross Movement, voluntary service, first aid, blood donation and humanitarian assistance during emergencies and disasters.
