The Red Cross Society today faces numerous challenges in a rapidly changing global landscape. With increasing humanitarian crises, especially in disturbed regions, the organization must enhance its momentum and mobilize greater public support to continue serving suffering humanity with dedication and unity.
Every year on May 8, Red Cross Day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of this noble humanitarian movement. This year’s theme, “United for Humanity,” emphasizes collective responsibility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to humanitarian service.
In Jammu and Kashmir, as in the rest of the country, the spirit of this theme is being actively observed. The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), J&K branch, is fully prepared to meet emerging challenges with renewed energy and a strong missionary spirit. It continues to encourage participation from all sections of society-students, youth, men and women-irrespective of region, faith, gender, or class. The day is marked by activities such as medical and blood donation camps, symposiums, painting competitions, and rallies involving young people.

Addressing Greater Challenges
Efforts are underway to raise awareness about the Red Cross’s humanitarian work and to mobilize resources in terms of manpower, finances, and materials. A sustained campaign is being conducted to engage students and youth in meaningful participation, particularly in assisting victims of natural and man-made disasters across the Union Territory.
Special attention is being given to disadvantaged groups, including women and vulnerable populations in urban, rural, and border areas. Assistance is provided without discrimination, upholding the fundamental principles of humanity, neutrality, and impartiality.
The General Secretary of IRCS J&K has played a key role in energizing public participation and strengthening the spirit of voluntary humanitarian service. His efforts have helped enhance coordination among various agencies-both official and non-official-in delivering timely aid to those in need.
A Noble Mission in a Challenging Terrain
Jammu and Kashmir, with its sensitive borders and difficult terrain, frequently faces emergencies that demand prompt and compassionate responses. The Red Cross Society plays a pivotal role in such situations, offering relief and support to those affected by crises.
The organization’s legacy in the region dates back to 1947, during the time of Partition. Its first Secretary, Col (Retd) Hiranand Dubey, played a remarkable role in addressing the challenges arising from conflict and displacement. Since then, many dedicated individuals have contributed to alleviating human suffering through the Red Cross’s efforts.
Over the years, the J&K branch has built a strong reputation for providing relief and rehabilitation during disasters, supported by the Central Red Cross Society in New Delhi. Its work stands as a testament to “singular service” in times of need.
Expanding Humanitarian Efforts
Significant progress has been made across divisional and district branches in Jammu and Kashmir. The organization continues to grow under the guidance of Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha, who serves as Chief Patron and ensures effective functioning.
Among its major initiatives is the establishment of blood banks in Jammu and Srinagar to meet increasing demand. Regular blood donation camps are organized to ensure timely availability for patients in need.
Another notable facility is the multi-storey “Attendants Sarai” at Maheshpura Chowk, Jammu. It provides affordable accommodation to attendants of patients admitted to Government Medical College, Jammu. Cancer patients and one attendant are offered free lodging and boarding, benefiting individuals from economically weaker sections and remote areas.
Efforts are also being made to expand dispensary services beyond Jammu and Srinagar to other districts. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras, medicines are made available at subsidized rates, easing the financial burden on patients.
Community Engagement and Youth Involvement
The Red Cross is actively working to strengthen Junior Red Cross (JRC) and Youth Red Cross (YRC) units in schools and colleges. These initiatives aim to build a strong network of volunteers ready to serve during emergencies.
Health awareness programs, particularly for adolescent girls, are also being conducted. Free sanitary napkins are distributed to promote hygiene and well-being. Additionally, essential items such as blankets, kitchen sets, and tarpaulins are provided to the needy.
The Red Cross and similar humanitarian organizations must continue to play a vital and urgent role in addressing human suffering. The J&K Red Cross Society remains committed to this noble mission, striving for the well-being of people and the betterment of humanity as a whole.
