SRINAGAR, May 2: Police today destroyed illegal poppy and cannabis cultivation in Anantnag and Shopian districts and registered cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, officials said.
In Anantnag, acting on specific inputs, Police detected illicit poppy cultivation at Sofipora village.
A case (FIR No. 31/2026) under Section 8/18 of the NDPS Act was registered at Pahalgam Police Station in this regard.
Cops visited the site, where the crop was identified by an agriculture expert, land was demarcated by revenue officials, samples were collected and the cultivation-spread over about four marlas-was destroyed.
In a separate action, Police found illegal poppy cultivation on land belonging to Farooq Ahmad Mir of Sheikhgund village.
The crop was destroyed on the spot and a case (FIR No. 44/2026) under the same provisions was registered at Uttrasoo Police Station.
Further investigation was in progress, Police said.
In Shopian, Police, in coordination with the Executive Magistrate, carried out a drive against wild cannabis in Shadab Karewa village.
The teams destroyed plants spread over about 30 marlas across two locations to prevent their use for intoxication purposes.
