SRINAGAR, Apr 27: With the annual Darbar Move approaching, authorities have stepped up preparations here, undertaking extensive painting of road dividers, footpath margins and key approach roads leading to the Civil Secretariat ahead of the reopening of Move offices on May 4.
Workers have been deployed along major routes, particularly those connecting to the Civil Secretariat, repainting central dividers, kerb stones and roadside margins to improve visibility, enhance road safety and spruce up the city’s appearance.
The activity is most visible in and around the Civil Secretariat, where cleaning drives and minor repair works are also underway.
Officials said the focus is on ensuring that all essential infrastructure, including office spaces and surrounding public areas, is ready before employees resume duties in Srinagar. They said that it has been a practice going for decades.
Government offices, currently functioning from Jammu, are scheduled to close by April 30 after office hours.
Work will resume in Srinagar after the transition, with departments coordinating to ensure the phased and orderly relocation of records and staff.
Officials said inter-departmental coordination is going on to avoid any disruption in official work during the shift, adding that arrangements related to transport, accommodation and office functioning have already been finalised.
The Darbar Move, a biannual practice of shifting the seat of governance between Jammu and Srinagar, was introduced in 1872 during the rule of Maharaja Ranbir Singh to maintain administrative continuity during harsh winters in the Valley.
Jammu serves as the winter capital, while Srinagar functions as the summer capital.
