Srinagar, Apr 14: Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, V.K. Birdi today said that action against drug peddlers and smugglers will be intensified in the coming days, warning of strict enforcement under an expanded anti-narcotics drive.
He said police will adopt a zero-tolerance approach, with peddlers, smugglers and drug abusers facing strict action.
Speaking to reporters at Gurudwara Chatti Padshahi, Birdi said the renewed push is being carried out under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, with all departments directed to strengthen efforts to curb the menace.
“The campaign has been ongoing for several years, but a new impetus has been given to ensure the future generation is protected,” he said, describing drug abuse as a serious societal threat.
On the Sopore incident, where protests broke out following allegations of harassment by a teacher and eight persons were arrested for vandalism, the IGP said police would act firmly against those taking the law into their own hands.
“What happened in Sopore-some people tried to take the law into their own hands. These individuals had nothing to do with the school and had come from outside. The police will ensure strict action against them,” he said.
