SRINAGAR, Apr 14: Police have arrested eight people allegedly involved in vandalism during protests against sexual harassment of a girl student by a lecturer in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday.
A senior lecturer at a government higher secondary school in Sopore was on Monday booked on charges of sexually assaulting a female student, police said.
“Sopore Police arrested 8 miscreants involved in vandalism during a student protest; 25 more identified. Strict action underway against those disturbing public order,” police said in a post on its X handle.
“We have registered a case against lecturer Ghulam Hassan Mir based on a sexual assault complaint against him,” a senior police officer said.
Students protested after the matter came to light on Monday, but the situation remained by and large peaceful, he said.
The Director of the Education Department has placed Mir under suspension and ordered a departmental inquiry against him.
Joint Director (North Kashmir) of the department has been appointed as the enquiry officer in the case, and he is expected to submit a report within 15 days, the officer added. (Agencies)
