Sat, others pay glowing tribute

JAMMU, Apr 13: J&K Ex-Services League (JKESL) under its president, Lt Gen Rakesh Kumar Sharma, (retd) with assistance of Army organized a function with great elegance and fervour in connection with celebration of 240th birth anniversary of Gen. Zorawar Singh, “The Napoleon of India” at Gen. Zorawar Chowk, Bahu Plaza, here today.

Rich homage and tributes were paid to ‘Hero of Jammu and Kashmir ‘ by all sections of society including Army, police, civil administration and social organisations.
A ceremonial Guard of the Army by 3 JAK RIF was presented as a tribute with full military honours to Gen. Zorawar Singh. Col. OS Chouhan, secretary, JKESL the ‘Master of Ceremony ‘ recounted the ‘Tale of Valour ‘ of Gen Zorawar Singh.
The function was attended by approximately 600 persons. This included Army soldiers, veterans, NCC cadets, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Students from Dogra College of Education, students from Fauji Public School and many others.
Sat Paul Sharma, Member of Parliament was the chief guest, Vikram Randhawa, MLA, Maj Gen Ajit, M Yeole, GOC 26 INF DIV were the guest of honour, Rakesh Minhas, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Rajinder Sharma, Ex-Mayor JMC, Padamshri, Dr SP Varma, president, Gandhi Global Family, were the special guests on the occasion.
JKESL appealed to Sat Paul Sharma and Vikram Randhawa, to rename JDA park at Zorawar Chowk as Gen Zorawar Park with minor adjustments like construction of Jaffari wall and installation of Gen Zorawar Singh statue in the Park. In addition Chhanni Himmat be renamed as Zorawar Nagar as befitting tribute to this great hero of J&K. Both the dignitaries accepted the appeal and gave assurance to do the needful on priority in this regard.
Lt Gen Rakesh Kumar Sharma, president J&K, Ex-Services League while speaking to media said that General Zorawar Singh was one of the most outstanding Generals of India. He was a master of mountain and manoeuvre warfare, great tactical genius and visionary. He was also a great administrator and planner. He was a man of impeachable integrity and honour. He appealed to the Government that history of J&K should be a separate chapter included in the school syllabus.
Speaking on the occasion, Sat Paul Sharma, MP said that the credit for expansion of J&K State up to Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Skardu and Tibet goes to Gen Zorawar Singh. He further said that Jammu region is the land of gallant soldiers in which Gen Zorawar Singh stands out. He was deeply religious and a “Soldier’s Soldier” who was loved and respected by his men. While paying tributes to one of the greatest warriors on the eve of his 240th birth anniversary, he thanked the JKESL and the Army for organizing this function every year.
