MOSCOW, Apr 13: The date of the UN Security Council vote on the resolution proposed by Russia and China to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East will be determined depending on the situation on the ground, Kirill Logvinov, the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s international organisations department, told Sputnik.
Earlier, Russia and China proposed that the UN Security Council consider an alternative draft resolution on the current situation in the Middle East, including from a maritime security perspective.
“At the aforementioned meeting, we, along with our Chinese partners, announced an alternative draft UN Security Council resolution in favour of de-escalation and negotiated solutions. The date of the vote will be determined depending on the situation on the ground,” Logvinov said.
The diplomat expressed hope that the remaining UN Security Council members would support the initiative of China and Russia.
On April 7, Russia and China vetoed the draft UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz. Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, noted that Russia could not support a text “that would create a dangerous precedent for international law.”
