JAMMU, Apr 11: Senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony today expressed grave concern over the massive damage caused to wheat crops in Jammu province due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms.
In a statement issued, Tony said that continuous heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging in fields, while strong winds and hailstorms have flattened standing wheat crops.
He said, “The crops were just two days away from harvesting for Baisakhi, but the sudden spell of rain has completely destroyed farmers’ hopes and hard work.”
“Farmers across Jammu region are facing huge financial losses as their crops have been soaked in water and grounded due to adverse weather conditions. They are the backbone of our economy and society, and today they are in deep distress. The Government must immediately step in to support them,” he added.
Appealing to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Tony urged him to take immediate action and come to the rescue of the affected farming community.
“The Chief Minister must direct concerned officers to conduct an immediate survey of crop damage on the ground and ensure adequate and liberal compensation to the farmers,” he said.
“Prompt Government intervention is crucial to mitigate the losses and safeguard the livelihood of thousands of farmers affected by this natural calamity,” Tony added.
