JAMMU, Apr 10: A special Paryavaran Pathshala (Environmental School) was organized the other day under the aegis of the nation-wide Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi (PSG) or Environmental Conservation Activities, at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Jammu, for students and staff of the institution. The chief guest of the occasion was Prof (Dr) Dilip Kumar, Regional Director of the IIMC.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dilip Kumar advised the trainees that although the Municipal Corporations and the administration or government had a great responsibility in taking care of the environment at the larger level, all the citizens were required to perform their daily civic duties. Therefore, everyone had a great role to play in resolving local environmental problems through responsible behavior and direct action, such as tree plantation, water conservation, mindful and judicious use of resources, cleaning ponds, water bodies, rivers and river/canal banks.
Reducing plastic and polythene use, recycling, waste management, saving electricity, energy, and resources, using energy-efficient methods and solar devices etc., avoiding unnecessary consumption and waste were suggested as some of the measures that must be pursued and adopted. His curt message was, “Plant Trees, Conserve Water, and Abandon Polythene (or Plastic).
Earlier, in his key note address, Rakesh Kumar, Shaikshanik Sansthan Pramukh of PSG (J&K) explained that objective of the Pathshala was to discuss environmental problems from the local to global level and motivate the participants for playing an active role in creating creative, participatory solutions.
